Saint-Quentin en Yvelines - 19 Octobre 2016. Sur le bois du Vélodrome National, l'équipe allemande écrase la course, façon rouleau compresseur. L'abattage impressionnant du leader Stefan Schumacher, ne laisse guère de doutes quant à l'issue de ce championnat d'Europe des stayers. Pourtant, ce soir là, étrangement, ce n'est pas le leader de la course qui capte la lumière, mais son jeune compatriote, le Brandebourgeois Franz Schiewer. En bord de piste et dans les tribunes, les spécialistes se poussent du coude, d'un air entendu : " Regarde un peu cette position idéale, cette élégance !" " Menton haut, poignets à plat, ligne dorsale idéale... Celui-là, il a tout. L'archétype du stayer "
Nul besoin d'être devin pour prévoir dès ce soir là à ce stayer inconnu des français un avenir radieux : l'année suivante il remporte haut la main à Berlin le championnat d'Europe. Le demi-fond s'était trouvé un nouveau maître, au bout d'une heure branchée sur haute tension, vouée à contenir la pression des deux Hollandais Honig et Kos, ce dernier livrant à cette occasion un phénoménal autant que sacrifitiel récital d'adieu. L'année suivante à Erfurt, le garçons récidive, mais à Pordenone l'an dernier, les choses ont tourné à sa confusion. Mis hors la course, il ne put réaliser la passe de trois.
Mais nous sommes beaucoup à penser que Franz Schiewer s'attachera dans ce qu'il reste de l'année 2020 à prouver qu'il reste le stayer européen numéro 1. Et ce jour là, j'espère bien être en bord de piste.
UN INTERVIEW PAS COMME LES AUTRES
Inquiet le Patrick avant de prendre contact avec notre homme.
La crainte de réponses neutres, d'un réserve exagérée vis-à-vis de l'interlocuteur inconnu - et Français de surcroît -, d'une prudence dans les réponses que l'on quête devenue la plaie de tout interview désormais. Mais divine surprise d'avoir eu affaire à un homme affable, sensible, impliqué dans sa discipline et aimant à l'évoquer, et qui a parfaitement joué le jeu de l'interview pour STAYER FRANCE.
Anecdotiquement (quoique...) Franz meurt visiblement d'envie de revenir courir un jour en France. Moi et quelques uns qui ont vu la vérité révélée il y a quatre ans au vélodrome national pareillement, vous vous en doutez !
Alors, Messieurs les organisateurs, vous savez ce qui vous reste à faire...

Worried he was, our Patrick before making contact with the man.
The fear for me to receveid some kind of neutral answers, of an exaggerated reservation towards the unknown interlocutor I was - and a French one, moreover - and of an exagerated prudence in the replies that has become the wound of any interview now. But "divine surprise" for me, who have dealt with an affable man, sensitive, involved in his discipline and loving to evoke it, who have played perfectly the game of this interview.

INTERVIEW FRANZ SCHIEWER
STAYER FRANCE : " Franz, on va commencer l'interview comme il est d'usage : ton âge et lieu de naissance ? "
F.S : " Franz Schiewer. Je suis né le 15 Novembre 1990 et j'ai donc 29 ans."
STAYER FRANCE : " Où es-tu né ? Et de quelle région d'Allemagne viens-tu ? Es tu marié ou célibataire ? "
F.S : " Je suis né à Forst, la ville la plus importante qui soit lorsque l'on parle de demi-fond (*). Forst est proche de la frontière polonaise, dans le land du Brandenburg. Je vis avec mes deux “girlfriends“, Ruby, 5 ans et Sarah, 31, sans oublier notre chien Oreo."
(*) n.d. STAYER FRANCE : Franz a tout à fait raison : sur sa piste fameuse ont été tournées en 1932 les séquences sportives du seul film jamais consacré à ce jour au demi-fond "Les Rivaux de la Piste")
STAYER FRANCE : " Quel est ton métier lorsque tu n'es pas derrière une moto sur les vélodromes ?"
F.S. : " Je suis officier de police, et exerce à Cottbus et ses environs"
STAYER FRANCE : " Quand et comment t'es tu mis au sport cycliste, et dans quel club ? "
F.S : " J'ai débuté en Avril 1999. Mes parents me cherchaient une occupation sportive et c'est ce qui m'a amené à Forst. Nous vivions pas loin, à vingt kilomètres de là.
Et quand j'ai découvert cette piste incroyable, j'ai tout de suite pensé : " Un jour tu devras courir là-dessus !"
Je me suis vite inscrit au P.S.V. Forst, mon premier club . Et qui est toujours mon club à ce jour ! "
STAYER FRANCE : " Franz, parlons de tes débuts sur la piste. As tu commencé par les courses de stayer ou par une des nombreuses autres spécialités de la piste ? "
F.S : " Mes premiers tours de roue dans le cyclisme I'ont été sur une piste. Junior, j'ai été jugé suffisamment bon pour participer au championnat d'Europe à Pruszkow en 2008, puis, passé U.23, à Saint-Petersbourg. Enfin, événement plus important, le championnat du Monde 2011 à Apeldoorn, où j'ai disputé la course aux points. ( n.d. STAYER FRANCE : en élite Franz est notamment devenu champion d'Allemagne de course aux points en 2010, champion d'Allemagne de poursuite olympique en 2011 avec Stefan Schäfer - déjà - , Niklas Arndt et Henning Bommel " puis à nouveau en 2013 avec Stefan Schäfer encore et Roger Kluge et Félix Donath.)
STAYER FRANCE : " Cours-tu également sur la route ? "
F.S. : " Oui, je pratique toujours en compétition sur route. J'adore les courses sur route car là tu construis la victoire en équipe, et à mes yeux, c'est en cyclisme ce qu'il y a de plus gratifiant. En 2009 j'ai été le plus jeune vainqueur du Tour de Berlin, mais depuis je cours en équipier, pour mes camarades de club"
STAYER FRANCE : " Ente tes deux titres de champion d'Europe des stayers acquis en 2017 et 2018, lequel a ta préférence. "
F.S. : " Difficile pour moi de trancher. A Berlin ça a été un peu comme à Saint-Quentin, parce que je n'étais pas alors très attendu, on ne me connaissait pas et l'émotion a plutôt été pour Gerd, mon entraîneur "
" Le plus mémorable pour moi a été Erfurt. Là, une grande pression pesait sur mes épaules, parce que là-bas on organisait plus ou moins pour moi et Gerd. Avec le recul, nous avons bien travaillé en équipe et sans Daniel, Stefan and leurs entraîneurs, nous n'aurions pas Gerd et moi décroché le titre."
STAYER FRANCE : " Revenons en 2016, lors de ce championnat d'Europe à Saint- Quentin -en - Yvelines où vous terminez second, et où le public français vous découvre. Vous rappelez-vous de votre performance ce jour-là ? Comment avez-vous vécu ces moments ? "
F.S : " Pendant ces journées en France, j'étais un peu sous pression. C'était mon premier euro de stayer, au milieu des autres d'athlètes des autres disciplines. Ma mission était d'aider mon ami Stefan (Schäfer n.d. STAYER FRANCE) à décrocher le titre. Au final, nous avons été suffisamment forts pour terminer premier et second. Ce fut une étape dans la construction de notre amitié avec Stefan, mais aussi bien sûr une étape dans ma relation avec Gerd."
STAYER FRANCE " Quelles sont les pistes chères à ton coeur ? En Allemagne, et ailleurs en Europe ? "
F.S : " En Allemagne, j'adore courir au Reichelsdorfer Keller à Nuremberg. Là tu peux atteindre le 110 kilomètres à l'heure ! Hélas, cette piste va fermer. C'était vraiment génial de pouvoir atteindre une pareille vitesse. Malheureusement je ne peux pas avoir d'avis sur les pistes françaises puisque jusqu'à ce jour nous n'y avons pas été invités (Messieurs les organisateurs, vous savez ce qu'il vous reste à faire maintenant n.d. STAYER FRANCE) " Donc, mon choix se porte sur la piste Oerlikon à Zürich, diablement rapide. Sur ses 333 mètres, on y ressent de bonnes sensations, comme sur des montagnes russes un peu, vertigineux avec en plus le privilège de courir devant des milliers de spectateurs CHAQUE semaine. C'est la seule piste à ma connaissance avec une telle activité. "
STAYER FRANCE " Franz, j'aimerais maintenant connaître un peu la situation du demi-fond en Allemagne. Tous les dix ans ou à peu près, ton pays fournit un, deux voire trois coureurs capables d'évoluer au plus haut niveau en Europe. As tu une explication à ce phénomène ? "
F.S. : " A mon avis cela tient au lien historique qui existe en Allemagne avec le demi-fond. Et puis nous avons les meilleurs entraîneurs du monde : Dippel, Gessler and Bäuerlein ont tous été champions d'Europe "
" Mais si tu veux une explication, il faut la chercher du côté de Rainer Podlesch. Sans son expérience, le succès n'aurait pas été au rendez-vous pour nos coureurs et entraîneurs. Et puis nous avons nos organisations historiques comme Forst, Erfurt, Berlin, Bielefeld, Chemnitz, Singen, Heidenau et j'en passe... Toutes ces villes qui sont capables de draîner au vélodrome beaucoup de spectateurs. C'est d'ailleurs pourquoi cela reste intéressant chez nous de débuter par le demi-fond quand tu es coureur cycliste "
STAYER FRANCE : " Combien de courses disputes-tu par an, à peu près ? Précises-nous sur quelles pistes si tu peux "
F.S. " A Forst deux ou trois, idem à Singen, et Chemnitz. Quatre à Erfurt et Heidenau et une à Berlin "
STAYER FRANCE : " La question spécial STAYER FRANCE : Es-tu un stayer bois ou béton ? "
F.S : " Pour moi cela ne fait pas de différence "
STAYER FRANCE : " En 2016 à Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, ton entraîneur était Gerard Gessler, tout comme en 2017 and 2018. Et à Pordenone tu étais entraîné par André Dippel. Pourquoi ? "
F.S : " Je n'ai pas couru là-bas avec André, mais avec Gerd."
STAYER FRANCE : " Te verras-t-on en compétition en 2020 sur une course de demi-fond (si tant est que l'on en organise avec cette affaire du Covid 19 ? "
F.S : " Bien sûr et le plus tôt possible "
STAYER FRANCE : " On peut connaître tes ambitions ? Continueras-tu dans le demi-fond pour chercher d'autres titres ? "
F.S : " J'ai juste à résoudre le problème de nos disponibilités avec Gerd. Jusqu'à Janvier, j'ai dû travailler quarante heures par semaine, jour et nuit. C'est la première fois que mes horaires ne sont plus aménagés et je dois trouver le moyen d'ajuster mes horaires d'entraînement et de course avec ceux de ma profession "
" J'adorerai en tous cas affronter Honig, Clere, Harnisch et Schweizer, mais on verra."
STAYER FRANCE : " Franz, pour les visiteurs français de STAYER FRANCE qui ne te connaissent encore pas, les grandes lignes de ton palmarès de stayer, national et international ? "
F.S : " Pour mes débuts de stayer en 2015, j'ai terminé second du championnat national. En 2016, je finissais sur la troisième marche du podium et second au championnat d'Europe. L'année suivante, je remportais le championnat d'Europe et terminait second du championnat d'Allemagne. En 2018, je remportais les deux et l'année d'après en 2019 je terminais second du championnat national. "
STAYER FRANCE : " Pour finir, une autre question "spécial STAYER FRANCE". Aimes-tu vraiment le demi-fond ? Tu n'ignores pas que le demi-fond est une discipline de tradition en Allemagne, où elle bénéficie d'un engouement particulier, qui ne s'est jamais démenti. De grands champions comme Erich Metze, Walter Lohman avant la seconde guerre mondiale, puis Karl-Heinz Marsell, Horst Gnas, Rainer et Carsten Podlesch ont conservé vive la flamme du demi-fond au pays de Goethe. Cet aspect de ton sport t'intéresse t-il ou ne prends tu en considération que le temps et les champions du moment ?"
F.S. : " J'apprécie vraiment les courses de demi-fond. Cette discipline a une histoire, c' est aussi un sport d'équipe, et j'aime ses à-côtés le bruit, la vitesse, les vapeurs d'échappement, le côté "dirty", les odeurs et la culture périphérique qui va avec. "
" Je connais seulement les Podlesch, et c'est si chouette de voir l'enthousiasme de Rainer pour notre spécialité. Nous n'aurions pas pu être champions d'Europe sans sa compétence et son soutien. Et puis c'est un tel régal de les écouter lui ou Christian Dippel raconter leurs histoires du passé. L'âge d'or des courses de demi-fond "

STAYER FRANCE : " Franz, would you please make yourself known ? First of all, how old are you ? Have you a second first name or Franz is your only one ? "
F.S : " My name is Franz Schiewer and I’m 29 years old."
STAYER FRANCE : " Your birthplace and the part of Germany do you come from ? And now, where do you live ? Bachelor or married man ? "
F.S : " I was born in Forst the most important city for stayer racing (*) Forst is near the polish border in Brandenburg. I have two “girlfriends“, 5 and 31 and together we have our dog Oreo."

STAYER FRANCE : " You got a job ? And -in affirmative- in what part ? "
F.S. : " I’m working as an police office in the streets of Cottbus and around."
STAYER FRANCE : " When did you begin practize the cycling sport ? Name(s) of your club(s) ?"
F.S : " I started cycling in April of 1999. My parents were looking for an activity. That was the reason to visit Forst. I was living 20km far away from Forst. I saw this stunning track and thought : " one day you have to race on it ". My first club was PSV Forst 1893 e.V. and it is still my home club."
STAYER FRANCE : " Franz, let’s talk now about your beginning on the track. Do you start by stayer races or by one of the other speciality of the track and when ? "
F.S : " I was starting track cycling from the very beginning. I was good enough to compete the E.C. Pruszkow in 2008 as a junior and later in Sant Petersburg U.23. The most important race was W.C. 2011 in Apeldoorn (points race)" ( n.d. STAYER FRANCE : Franz was 2010 Elite national champion of point race 'Allemagne de course aux points en 2010, 2011 national champion of team pursuit with already Stefan Schäfer, Niklas Arndt and Henning Bommel " then in 2013 again national team pursuit champion with Stefan Schäfer, Roger Kluge and Félix Donath. )
STAYER FRANCE : " Do you practize also road races ? In affirmative, in which races ?"
F.S. : " Yes, I did and I still compete in road races. I love road races because you achieve a win as a team and this is for me the most important thing in cycling. In 2009 I was the youngest winner of the Tour de Berlin but since this I race just for my teammates."
STAYER FRANCE : " Now you got two Europeanchamp titles. Which is the one you prefer ? Have you special memories to tell to our visitors about those titles ? "
F.S. : " It’s difficult to say. Berlin was like France because it wasn’t just stayer. So a lot of people got to know stayer racing. It was very emotional for my Pacer Gerd."
" But the more important one for me was Erfurt. I had a lot of pressure on my shoulders because Erfurt organized it more or less because of Gerd and me."
"All in all both were really good team efforts. Without Daniel, Stefan and there Pacers we wouldn’t have one titel."
STAYER FRANCE : " I remember for my part your race at St Quentin en Yvelines when you have finished in second place. In this event, the French audience discovers you. Do you remember your performance over there ? How do you live these moments in France ?"
F.S : " France was bit overwhelming. First euros in stayer racing and all the other athletes of different disciplines. I was nominated to help my friend Stefan to get the win. In the end we were good enough to become first and second. It was a really important race for our friendship but also to grow with Gerd."
STAYER FRANCE " What is the track you prefer : 1°) in Germany 2°) in other country of Europe ? "
F.S : " In Germany I loved to race at Reichelsdorfer Keller in Nürnberg. You could do 110 kilometers per hour. Sadly this track had to close. It was pretty awesome to race that fast."
" Sadly I can’t tell you something about stayer tracks in France because no one invited us so far."
" Thats why I have to choose Oerlikon Zurich. It is fast as hell. 333 meters short and it feels like rolercoster. Pretty steep and you have the chance to race in front of thousands spectators EVERY week. This is the only track I know it works so well."
STAYER FRANCE " Franz, let’s talk now about the stayer activity in Germany. I observe that Germany provide each decade two or three good athletes, able to be at the high level of competition in Europe. Is there an explanation ? "
F.S. : " I guess it is because of the german history in stayer racing. We still have a few of the best pacemakers in the world. Dippel, Gessler and Bäuerlein are all E.C."
" Another important reason is Rainer Podlesch. Without his experience we wouldn’t be successful as cyclists or pacer."
" Because of the history organizers are able to have events like Forst, Erfurt, Berlin, Bielefeld, Chemnitz, Singen, Heidenau and so on. All these cities are able to have a lot of spectators and so it is still interesting to start stayer racing as an cyclist."
STAYER FRANCE : " Franz, how many races per year ? And on which tracks in Germany (please named the main ones only if you want)"
F.S. " Forst 2/3; Erfurt 4; Singen 2/3; Berlin 1; Heidenau 4; Bielefeld 2/3; Chemnitz 2/3"
STAYER FRANCE : " For your races as a stayer, do you prefer tracks in concrete or wood, and why ?"
F.S : " To me it doesn’t matter."
STAYER FRANCE : " In 2016 at St Quentin en Yvelines, your pacemaker was Gerard Gessler and too in 2017 and 2018. At Pordenone you were paced by André Dippel. There’s a reason why ?"
F.S : " I wasn’t racing with André. I raced with Gerd."
STAYER FRANCE : " Will you still compete in stayer races in 2020 (as long as competition may be organized with the Covid 19 affair) ? "
F.S : " Yes I will as good as possible."
STAYER FRANCE : " Have you any ambitions ? To go on with stayer races in the future and get some other titles ? "
F.S : " I have to find out what is possible for me and after that what is possible together with Gerd. Until January this year I have to work 40 hours per week day and night. This is the first time I’m no longer supported by the police. So I have to see how good I can train and race beside my worklife."
" It would be great to race face to face against Honig, Clere, Harnisch and Schweizer but we will see."
STAYER FRANCE : " Franz, for the French visitors of STAYER FRANCE who don’t know so much about you, can you indicate your palmares in the stayer field (National championship and European championship) ?"
F.S : " I started stayer in 2015 and became second at nationals. 2016 3. at nationals and 2. at EC. 2017 2. nationals and 1. EC. 2018 both first. 2019 2. nationals."
STAYER FRANCE : " At last, a special question. Do you really enjoy the stayer races ? You know that stayer races, as far as we can remember, is a real tradition in Germany, with big champs like Metze, Lohman before worldwar II and Marsell, Gnas, Podlesch and so on after. Are you curious about this angle of your sport or do you consider only the present times ? "
F.S. : " I really like to do stayer races because its historic, team sport, loud, dirty, fast, rare, smells and a subculture. I only know both Podlesch’s and it is great to feel the enthusiasm of Rainer. We couldn’t became EC without his support and knowledge."
"Beside that it is great to listen him or Christian Dipple when they start talking about the past. The golden time of stayer races."
